Preparing for exams can feel overwhelming, but with the right strategies, success is well within your reach. Over the years I’ve worked with countless students and I always recommend approaches backed by science to help them study more effectively. Here are six powerful techniques to start using today so you can optimise your revision and nail your exams.

1. Embrace Active Recall and Spaced Repetition

One of the most effective ways to retain information is through active recall. Instead of passively re-reading your notes or highlighting text, test yourself. Ask questions, try to recall key points from memory and practise explaining concepts without looking at your materials. This process strengthens your ability to remember under exam conditions.

Pair this with spaced repetition, a technique where you review material at gradually increasing intervals. For example, revisit a topic a day later, then three days later, and then a week after that. This reinforces your memory over time and reduces the chance of forgetting.

2. Study Smarter with the Pomodoro Technique

I always stress the importance of studying in focused bursts rather than slogging through hours without a break. The Pomodoro Technique is a fantastic way to keep your energy levels high and your mind sharp. Set a timer for 25 minutes of intense study, followed by a 5-minute break. Repeat this cycle a few times, and then take a longer break of 15-30 minutes. You’ll find it much easier to stay focused and productive.

3. Mix It Up with Interleaved Practice

It’s tempting to stick to one subject or topic until you’ve mastered it, but science tells us that interleaved practice is more effective. This means alternating between different topics or question types within a single study session. For example, instead of spending two hours on one maths topic, try switching between algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. This approach challenges your brain to adapt, improves problem-solving, and strengthens your understanding across the board.

4. Dig Deeper with Elaborative Interrogation

Understanding why something is true is just as important as knowing what is true. I always encourage my students to use elaborative interrogation—asking questions like, “Why does this happen?” or “How does this concept relate to others I’ve learned?” Exploring the reasoning behind facts helps you create meaningful connections, which in turn makes the material easier to remember.

5. Reinforce Understanding with the Feynman Technique

One of the best ways to master a topic is to teach it. The Feynman Technique, named after physicist Richard Feynman, involves simplifying a concept as though you were explaining it to someone else. If you can break down a complex topic into simple terms, you truly understand it. On the other hand, if you find yourself stuck, it highlights areas where you need to focus your efforts.

6. Create a Distraction-Free Environment

A focused mind is a productive mind. Make your study environment as distraction-free as possible. Turn off notifications, use website blockers if necessary, and let people around you know when you’re unavailable. Set specific times for studying so you can get into a routine and make sure your workspace is clean and organised. Small changes like these can make a huge difference to your concentration.
